Sweet Ruin Ring
Sweet Ruin Ring
"Sweet Ruin" ring currently in the "What is Jewellery?" exhibition in October at Manchester Craft & Design Centre. Following on from Tate Britain's Ruin Lust, Jade calls this work a "Celebration of Modern ruin".
The modern built environment does not stay clean and pristine like it's freshly painted design. This can sometimes cause an unpleasant feeling of unease when inhabiting these tired, dirty or overgrown spaces. They are a mixture of a purposeful creation and natural processes taking hold so that we see them disintegrating in front of our eyes. This piece is intended as a playful response to the decay of our manufactured surroundings, looking for ways of understanding and therefore appreciating the changing aspects of our environment, as a cycle of making new and breaking down.
"I hope that if we can look at our own modern surroundings with the same rose-tinted view we use for aged ruins and natural objects, appreciating the processes and textures for what they are we will be happier in our daily lives."
