These are a very special piece of hallmarking history! These tokens were given to jewelers after they left their package of precious metal jewellery or silversmithing to be hallmarked. Once the package was ready, they would return the token to securely collect their own package. Some of the early numbers are very worn fro decades of use. So many hands and millions of pounds worth of precious objects they would have represented! It is not wonder a reward was originally offered to return any lost tokens to the police station that used to be on Old Jewry Street.

Today, when I drop off my hallmarking I receive a barcoded ticket which is no way as special, but it does exactly the same job.

There are many numbers available but each is obviously one of a kind so please ask if there are numbers which are special to you and I will be happy to check. Once that number is gone, it’s gone!
